Sun Microsystems is part of the very fiber of internet technology. So when they decided to do their first internal carbon audit, it came as second nature to develop it as a web tool, and second nature as well to open source it.
Open Eco allows any company to go online, at no cost, and measure carbon usage for multiple buildings across a span of several years. It drastically lowers the barrier to entry for a process that is often expensive, confusing and lacking standardization.
But the old “tree in the forest” question applies here: if no one can figure out how to use the tool, all those well-intentioned algorithms might as well not exist. We distilled a complicated process into a simple, sophisticated user experience that honors Sun’s noble efforts.
